Preview: new ISB CD

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, September 22, 2017, In : cd recordings

Soon to be released at the National Brass Band Finals on Saturday 14 October, 'Endeavour - a weekend with the ISB' is the International Staff Band's latest 'repertoire' album - a selection of music they have featured over the past year or so. As I have some music on the recording I thought I would take opportunity to give you a heads-up on the pieces we know are included. If you want to pre-order your CD you can do so here.

My own work Endeavour is the title track and was written in 2014 for t...

In Memory: Simon Birkett

Posted by Martin Cordner on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, In : life news

I just wanted to add my own words of tribute to Simon, who passed away on Friday.

Simon and I first met in the 1990s when he began working at 101 Queen Victoria Street for the Salvation Army’s UK Music Editorial department, which at that time was under the headship of Richard Phillips. At that time, I also worked on ‘the building’ as it was known. I worked in the Public Relations Department in the basement, whilst I recall Music Editorial was situated on the top floor, just along from t...

ISB WITH 'BOUNDLESS SPIRIT'

Posted by Martin Cordner on Sunday, October 25, 2015, In : performances

Click here for a live recording of 'Boundless Spirit' from the International Staff Band's tour in Australia.

This new work is a taster of some of the music from the opening session of Boundless 2015, and has been especially written for the ISB. This rather unique recording features Melbourne Staff Band Australia Bandmaster Ken Waterworth ably depping on 2nd Baritone, an impressive high C# from ISB Soprano Gary Fountain (3:39) and an apparent sheet-music malfunction from th...

BugleTweet growing

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, October 25, 2013, In : BugleTweet

Following on from Enfield Citadel Band's pre-contest festival and the National Finals from the Royal Albert Hall two weeks ago, I'm looking forward to providing updates for the visit of International Staff Band to Birmingham Citadel corps this coming weekend. In case you hadn't heard, BugleTweet is a new venture I recently started as a reach-out ministry to others who through distance, ill-health or other circumstances, cannot attend events. Of course, text-based updates aren't the perfect su...

New project - ISB recording

Posted by Martin Cordner on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : cd recordings

Hi everybody,

Wow - has it really been THAT long since I last updated the site? Sincere apologies to all those who have become devastated, disillusioned, lost the faith and started reading Andrew Mackereth's website instead...ha!

Most of you will have heard that the latest ISB 'repertoire' recording is now available from World of Brass. It was my great pleasure to write the sleeve notes for this album... my first outing into this kind of thing. I hope you enjoy them as the experience was akin...

Staff Bands playing Escape Velocity

Escape Velocity was commissioned by the Amsterdam Staff Band early in 2011. With the permission of B/M Olaf Ritman I took it to Camp Ladore last summer, and since then the ISB and now NYSB have brought it into their repertoire. The picture above shows the NYSB rehearsing the piece on the impressive stage of the USA Eastern Territory's annual Commissioning celebration 9/10 June 2012. It's a thrill to know that B/M Waiksnoris has chosen to play the piece.

A few bands have be...

Escape Velocity: ISB premiere confirmed

Posted by Martin Cordner on Saturday, March 24, 2012, In : performances

Had confirmation today that the ISB will feature my recent work Escape Velocity in the second half of tonight's programme at Morley Town Hall. This is exciting news for me and I'm disappointed I can't be there to hear it. If you're going tonight I'd love to hear your response.

Quoting my earlier post:
"There's a strong gospel message within this piece; that though the pressures and values of the world seek to enslave us, the power of God shown in Christ affords us the opportunity to 'escape' i...

Escape Velocity on ISB radar

Posted by Martin Cordner on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, In : performances

Friends within the ISB tell me that Escape Velocity was on the rehearsal room stands last week. I've now been asked for composer's remarks/score notes so it sounds as if it could be on the programme soon. I've been thrilled to know the ASB have been using the piece over the past year and would welcome news of an ISB performance if you get to hear one.

ISB premiere of 'Fusion' announced

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, September 9, 2011, In : performances

I've had some positive news regarding Fusion. The piece was actually written for the ISB and I mentioned in a previous post that Bandmaster Steve Cobb used it at the UK Salvation Army's Territorial Music School recently. He tells me he also used it in the USA at the Central Territory's Music Institute this summer - great stuff. Incidentally Bandmaster Peggy Thomas chose Lord of Sea and Sky to be played at CMI this year, too.

It's looking like Fusion will get its ISB premiere during their fir...

'Fusion' world premiere

Posted by Martin Cordner on Saturday, July 30, 2011, In : performances
Just got news that Fusion was performed tonight (Sat 30 July 2011) by the A-band (Dr Stephen Cobb) at the UK's TMS (Territorial Music School) final festival.  I had submitted it to Steve for the ISB to look at some weeks ago but had not heard back regarding its suitability.  So this news is a pleasant, albeit unexpected surprise.  The life of a composer, eh?

It's music camp season and I guess this is the time of year when composers are popular because bands like to play new music!  With Ba...
