CD Review: Vain Resistance

Posted by Martin Cordner on Monday, November 28, 2016, In : cd recordings

When a piece of mine is recorded I always appreciate receiving a complimentary CD, so I say thank you to the Amsterdam Staff Band for sending me their latest recording. I have listened to it a few times and to help you decide whether or not to spend your hard-earned cash on it, I thought I would share my feelings on the recording.

First up, the CD is in a unique rounded-edged case which is nice to hold in the hand. The sleeve notes are a little hard to read because of the chosen colours, but t...

Cornet Solo - I Will Sing

Posted by Martin Cordner on Sunday, July 13, 2014, In : new music

In recent months I have been able to complete the transcription of a 1964 Cornet Solo entitled 'I will sing' by Bernard Verkaaik - one time Bandmaster of the Netherlands National Band. The clever variation solo, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, was written for New York Staff Bandmaster Richard Holz and is based on the song 'I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever' by James Henry Fillmore.

Read more about the work here. Also, I'd be pleased to hear from any soloists who ...

1. First in the hands of the paying public will be the International Staff Band's latest repertoire album Quest. This features Call of the Gospel and Fusion

ASB recording of Fusion

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, March 2, 2012, In : performances

I'm really grateful to Bandmaster Olaf Ritman and the ASB for playing some of my music in recent years. They recently performed Fusion and I've linked an ASB video to the page for you to hear. It seems that for some reason they had to undergo an entire horn section transplant (!), but aside from that and one or two loose ends they give a confident read of this challenging piece for brass band.

I hope your spirit is lifted as you listen!

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, March 2, 2012, In : performances

Good to see that The Great Rescue is presently on the repertoire of the the Amsterdam Staff BandFor your interest I've linked a recent ASB video recording of the piece to the webpage above. I know of one or two corps bands around the world that have used the march, but I'm not sure it's being used by anybody else. If you know that it is, please get in touch!

The piece is freely available to bands. If you want the score and parts, just get in contact and I'll email them to you.

'Fusion' world premiere

Posted by Martin Cordner on Saturday, July 30, 2011, In : performances
Just got news that Fusion was performed tonight (Sat 30 July 2011) by the A-band (Dr Stephen Cobb) at the UK's TMS (Territorial Music School) final festival.  I had submitted it to Steve for the ISB to look at some weeks ago but had not heard back regarding its suitability.  So this news is a pleasant, albeit unexpected surprise.  The life of a composer, eh?

It's music camp season and I guess this is the time of year when composers are popular because bands like to play new music!  With Ba...

Escape Velocity - world premiere

Posted by Martin Cordner on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, In : new music
Friends in the Amsterdam Staff Band tell me that Escape Velocity may get its first outing at their partnership concert with the Canadian Staff Band early next month (you might want to Google translate that link!).  If it does feature, I'll see if a recording is available so that I can post a clip on this site.

New work heads to the ASB

Posted by Martin Cordner on Monday, April 11, 2011, In : new music
I can't believe it...12 months after the request came in, I've finally managed to finish this work for the Amsterdam Staff Band!  It's called Escape Velocity and features the Hillsongs anthem 'His eye is on the Sparrow (I will run to you)' ...

And I will run to You,
To Your words of truth;
Not by might, not by power
But by the Spirit of God.
Yes, I will run the race,
Till I see Your face.
Oh, let me live in the glory of Your grace. well as a reference to the old song 'Saved by Grace' - verse th...
