Leanne and myself are looking forward to joining the staff team at the USA Eastern Salvation Army's Territorial Music Camp in a couple of week's time. The event is held at Star Lake Camp and Conference Centre in the foothills of the picturesque Ramapo Mountains, New Jersey.
Commonly referred to as simply 'Star Lake', the music camp is one of the USA Eastern Territory's premier training events for young people in music and arts. Rather excitingly, in terms of attendance, this year the camp is set to be one of the biggest in decades, with the application process having to close early and a waiting list now in place. It will be wonderful to share with around 200 young people as well as work alongside the other guest leaders, Territorial Music Secretary Derek Lance and all the team.
The theme for the week is 'Wake up the Saint' which calls to mind words of scripture from the book of Revelation: 'Come, Lord Jesus'. I am busy writing a major work of the same name for the Star Lake band - the group I am designated to lead. Also, I don't usually turn my hand to vocal music but I have written a song to be used by one of the choirs there - exciting! In terms of other music for the band, I will be bringing a few recent works of my own alongside music by Ayma, Ball, Bowen, Goffin and Redhead, and some quality manuscript works by Dudley Bright and Philip Hannevik.
Leanne is excited about her duties which will include leading the Bible Study elective and instructing in the voice class major. In addition to leading the Star Lake band I will be playing in the Instructor's Ensemble and teaming up with New York-based composer Dorothy Gates to lead a composition elective. Alongside helping the students with their own writing, we will be taking them through a detailed study of Dean Goffin's 'The Light of the World'. I plan to make this available via YouTube later this year.
We have attended many music camps before and always find it an amazing and humbling privilege to share in the lives of young Christians who, like us, face daily joys and challenges and have so many questions. We pray they will indeed 'find themselves' - discover who God has created them to be and what his divine purpose is for them.
We hope to post updates to my Facebook page during the week so stay tuned!
