New Trombone Solo

A few months ago I was asked by Brett Baker to write a trombone solo and I'm pleased to report it is now complete.

Brett is an accomplished trombonist with a worldwide reputation - for the past twelve years he has held the prestigious position of principal trombone with the Black Dyke band. It really is an honour to be asked to write something for him.

As part of his master's studies at the University of Salford,
Brett is embarking on a new recording of Salvation Army trombone solos to be recorded with Enfield Citadel Band in the spring of 2013, and the plan is for the solo to recorded on that album.

The solo is called The Follower and is inspired by the story of John Newton (of 'Amazing Grace' fame). It doesn't attempt to portray a detailed account of his life in music, but rather explores the stages of Newton's life as someone who followed in his father's footsteps as a seaman, followed the ways of the world as a young adult, and latterly followed the ways of Christ as an Anglican minister.

It was tempting to use the common tune 'New Britain', (called 'Amazing Grace' in the SA tune book), but instead I decided on a new tune to Newton's words written by Rhonda Venables in recent years. It is an attractive and wonderfully simple tune that lends itself to harmonic treatment and I hope gives the work a firm base.

I must say a quick word of thanks to Rhonda Venables for permission to use the tune, and Roger Trigg who as a friend of mine, colleague salvationist and gifted trombone player himself, came to the rescue with sound advice on the technicalities of playing the trombone.

So, here's looking forward to the spring, but in the meantime I offer season's greetings to all who read this. May the true peace of Christ cut through the noise and touch your heart this Christmastime.
