ISB WITH 'BOUNDLESS SPIRIT'

Posted by Martin Cordner on Sunday, October 25, 2015, In : performances

Click here for a live recording of 'Boundless Spirit' from the International Staff Band's tour in Australia.

This new work is a taster of some of the music from the opening session of Boundless 2015, and has been especially written for the ISB. This rather unique recording features Melbourne Staff Band Australia Bandmaster Ken Waterworth ably depping on 2nd Baritone, an impressive high C# from ISB Soprano Gary Fountain (3:39) and an apparent sheet-music malfunction from th...

St Denio Variations at Star Lake

Greetings all!

Greg Tuck (Director, Star Lake facility) has informed me that St Denio Variations is being rehearsed at Star Lake camp right now. It's always good to know that a piece is being played, but particularly one like this which, for most of it's existence, has sat around in band room cupboards. I'm not sure which band and bandmaster is looking at the piece, but I really hope they enjoy working with it.

Staff Bands playing Escape Velocity

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, June 8, 2012, In : performances

Escape Velocity was commissioned by the Amsterdam Staff Band early in 2011. With the permission of B/M Olaf Ritman I took it to Camp Ladore last summer, and since then the ISB and now NYSB have brought it into their repertoire. The picture above shows the NYSB rehearsing the piece on the impressive stage of the USA Eastern Territory's annual Commissioning celebration 9/10 June 2012. It's a thrill to know that B/M Waiksnoris has chosen to play the piece.

Escape Velocity: ISB premiere confirmed

Posted by Martin Cordner on Saturday, March 24, 2012, In : performances

Had confirmation today that the ISB will feature my recent work Escape Velocity in the second half of tonight's programme at Morley Town Hall. This is exciting news for me and I'm disappointed I can't be there to hear it. If you're going tonight I'd love to hear your response.

Quoting my earlier post:
"There's a strong gospel message within this piece; that though the pressures and values of the world seek to enslave us, the power of God shown in Christ affords us the opportunity to 'escape' i...

Escape Velocity on ISB radar

Posted by Martin Cordner on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, In : performances

Friends within the ISB tell me that Escape Velocity was on the rehearsal room stands last week. I've now been asked for composer's remarks/score notes so it sounds as if it could be on the programme soon. I've been thrilled to know the ASB have been using the piece over the past year and would welcome news of an ISB performance if you get to hear one.

ASB recording of Fusion

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, March 2, 2012, In : performances

I'm really grateful to Bandmaster Olaf Ritman and the ASB for playing some of my music in recent years. They recently performed Fusion and I've linked an ASB video to the page for you to hear. It seems that for some reason they had to undergo an entire horn section transplant (!), but aside from that and one or two loose ends they give a confident read of this challenging piece for brass band.

I hope your spirit is lifted as you listen!

ASB recording of The Great Rescue

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, March 2, 2012, In : performances

Good to see that The Great Rescue is presently on the repertoire of the the Amsterdam Staff BandFor your interest I've linked a recent ASB video recording of the piece to the webpage above. I know of one or two corps bands around the world that have used the march, but I'm not sure it's being used by anybody else. If you know that it is, please get in touch!

The piece is freely available to bands. If you want the score and parts, just get in contact and I'll email them to you.

ISS - up close and personal

Posted by Martin Cordner on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, In : performances
Hello everybody!  Thanks for bearing with me during a busy few weeks. At long last here is some latest news!

We at Sydenham SA were privileged to host the International Staff Songsters this past weekend. I was really impressed with the group. They clearly love what they do and enjoy each other's company - this came across. It was a weekend of many highlights; the exemplary solo singing of Kerry Sampson and Rob Moye, the three-movement work Anastasis (Westwood/Phillips) and the group's singing ...

ISB premiere of 'Fusion' announced

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, September 9, 2011, In : performances

I've had some positive news regarding Fusion. The piece was actually written for the ISB and I mentioned in a previous post that Bandmaster Steve Cobb used it at the UK Salvation Army's Territorial Music School recently. He tells me he also used it in the USA at the Central Territory's Music Institute this summer - great stuff. Incidentally Bandmaster Peggy Thomas chose Lord of Sea and Sky to be played at CMI this year, too.

It's looking like Fusion will get its ISB premiere during their fir...

Summer School Festival

Posted by Martin Cordner on Saturday, August 20, 2011, In : performances
I'm just home from attending the final festival of the Belfast Temple Summer School at Orangefield Presbyterian Church, Belfast. Orangefield is a great venue - comfortable, spacious with terrific acoustics. Performance-wise everything was at a good level this year; musical standard, energy and communication. After a full week of activities, socialising and the inevitable late nights, the staff and students did tremendously well. In fact it's a wonder they were still standing.

There were many h...

'Fusion' world premiere

Posted by Martin Cordner on Saturday, July 30, 2011, In : performances
Just got news that Fusion was performed tonight (Sat 30 July 2011) by the A-band (Dr Stephen Cobb) at the UK's TMS (Territorial Music School) final festival.  I had submitted it to Steve for the ISB to look at some weeks ago but had not heard back regarding its suitability.  So this news is a pleasant, albeit unexpected surprise.  The life of a composer, eh?

It's music camp season and I guess this is the time of year when composers are popular because bands like to play new music!  With Ba...

Catching up

Posted by Martin Cordner on Sunday, July 24, 2011, In : performances
That's us home from a fantastic USA trip that took us to Manhattan, the Salvation Army's Camp Ladore near Waymart PA, Alexandria VA, Washington DC and the Army's Star Lake Camp near Bloomingdale NJ.

I'm just posting this to let you know I will be uploading Ladore Band's rendition of 'Escape Velocity' within the next few hours - probably to YouTube where it will be available to view for a few days.  I know some of you will be interested to hear this, not least Olaf and the ASB guys, plus the La...
