New Music: Pulse

Posted by Martin Cordner on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, In : new music

I have recently completed 'Pulse' - a new work for brass band which will receive its world premiere by the International Staff Band at Regent Hall Salvation Army this Saturday 25 March 2017.

Inspired by a recent worship meeting on the subject of integrity and through the songs 'Refiner's fire', 'Teach me to dance' and 'Holy, holy, holy', this music challenges the listener to live a life of integrity by responding to God's leading (the 'pulse' of His heart). As you might expect, there is recurr...

New Music: Semper Fidelis

Posted by Martin Cordner on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, In : new music

'Semper Fidelis' ('always faithful') has been written for the AUS Territorial Youth Band and their visit to the UK over May-June 2017.

The 6-minute overture is a mix of sci-fi inspired sounds and contemporary worship music, through which it celebrates God's faithfulness and challenges us to respond in faith to him. It's not all new though, the fabulous old hymn 'Great is thy faithfulness' is referenced too.

Hopefully Bandmaster Ken Waterworth will select the piece for use by the band when they ...

Free music - until 14 November!

Posted by Martin Cordner on Sunday, November 6, 2016, In : new music

Hi everybody

I'm going to need to make the 'five free pieces' offer a time-limited one, so it'll run until 14 November 2016.

So far ten bands have availed of the music and will all be supporting a Salvation Army project with time or money - I've left it to them to decided what they will do.

Also, please note that the five pieces here are all advanced level. I plan to release some intermediate level music in due course.

If you're a band already based at a Salvation Army centre, please pay it forward by making a donation to the corps Community Fund or other corps initiative - thank you!

Music Update - February

Posted by Martin Cordner on Monday, February 9, 2015, In : new music

Hey there everyone... it's been a while since any updates so thought you might want to hear what's happening on the music front.
I've recently completed a 9-minute major work around the Creation story as told in Genesis 1. I'm delighted to have been approached by a Christian Brass Band organisation who want to look at the piece for a contest it is organising somewhere in the world this year. As it is possible it will  be chosen as a test piece I can't say any more about it yet. Watch this spac...

Americana Complete

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, November 7, 2014, In : new music

As sometimes happens in composition, Americana journeyed in a slightly different direction than planned. Read about where it ended up here.

Really grateful to the New York Staff Band for the invitation to write for them. I hope the piece will serve effectively the mission of the band.

New work for NYSB

Posted by Martin Cordner on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, In : new music

In the making right now is 'Americana' - a new overture for the New York Staff Band and their visit to the UK and the Boundless International Congress June-July 2015.

The work seeks to capture some of the essence of American classical and contemporary music. With Copland-esque themes and driving rock rhythms the contemporary work will feature American hymn tunes, and provide a platform for the NYSB to showcase some of its principal players.

I am planning to deliver 'Americana' early in October.

New March - Citadel Praise

Posted by Martin Cordner on Thursday, September 4, 2014, In : new music

I'm pleased to announce the completion of a new march. Written for Ipswich Citadel Corps' 130th Anniversary in 2014, Citadel Praise is for Triumph Series (medium-sized) band. It features two choruses that have been associated with the corps over the years: the lively gospel song It's Coming Down and a gentle chorus entitled An Evening Prayer.

The march will be exclusively with Ipswich Citadel Band for the next few months then, as with all my music, will be forwarded to UK Music Ministries for ...

New work for Enfield

Posted by Martin Cordner on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, In : new music

I'm really pleased to have been asked by Bandmaster Jonathan Corry to write a piece for Enfield Citadel Band. I had a small link with ECB through Brett Baker's CD project in 2013, but this is the first time I have been able to write something specifically for the band.

The new work is entitled Songs of Ascent and in three movements (fast-slow-fast) presents well-known songs: My help comes from the Lord (Bray/Moen/Nystrom), To the hills I lift my eyes (Ernest Rance, Tune: Ochills) and Hills of...

Cornet Solo - I Will Sing

Posted by Martin Cordner on Sunday, July 13, 2014, In : new music

In recent months I have been able to complete the transcription of a 1964 Cornet Solo entitled 'I will sing' by Bernard Verkaaik - one time Bandmaster of the Netherlands National Band. The clever variation solo, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, was written for New York Staff Bandmaster Richard Holz and is based on the song 'I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever' by James Henry Fillmore.

Read more about the work here. Also, I'd be pleased to hear from any soloists who ...

Two New Works

Posted by Martin Cordner on Thursday, February 13, 2014, In : new music

Hello everybody!

I've recently been able to complete two new interesting works - follow the links below to read more on them.

The first is a classical transcription of the Ohne Sorgen Polka by Josef Strauss, a brisk and light-hearted work that is very short in duration but packed-full of energy. The piece was requested by Dr Stephen Cobb for next week's Territorial Youth Band course in Poole UK. Already premièred by the ISB in Belfast last month, I'm hoping it will be on the Youth Band's Final...

The Jet d'Eau, Geneva 12 August 2013

Greetings from Geneva! My family and I are enjoying a short summer break here in Switzerland. We've been here a few times and it's one of our favourite countries to visit.

Whilst here I've taken some time to write explanatory notes for my latest composition The Adventurers. The notes include audio clips and score excerpts. I hope they are of interest and encouragement to you.

Our own adventure in central Europe continues a little while longer, but for now I ...

New music - The Adventurers

Posted by Martin Cordner on Monday, July 22, 2013, In : new music

I'm pleased to announce the imminent completion of The Adventurers, a new selection written at the request of Bandmaster Chris Ward and the Hempstead Citadel corps band.

The piece features three songs from the SA genre: 'He leadeth me', 'By His Hand' and 'Lead me'.

'He leadeth me! O blessèd thought!' (SASB 725) is straight from the SA songbook and uses Tune 21 'He leadeth me!' - the popular choice of tune Stateside.

The middle movement features 'By His Hand' - another setting of the same son...

With the help of the good folks in Woodbridge corps band, I've finally settled on the title 'Fired-up!' for their new march, written for the corps' 130th anniversary this year.

You can read about the piece, listen to a excerpt & catch a glimpse of the score here.

Every blessing to Woodbridge corps as they celebrate their anniversary. Let's pray that in thanking God for the blessings of the past, the corps will be fired-up for the future.

Let there be Rock!

Posted by Martin Cordner on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, In : new music

Hi everybody,

I recently completed another Unity Series number, this time for Leeds West Hunslet young people's band. I got the request a few months back from Ashley Griffin, a soldier at the corps, member of the YP band team and up-coming composer. I hope the piece will be of good service to the band, not least in encouraging the members and of course, extending their Kingdom-building repertoire.

The piece is a fun & catchy, three and a half minute concert arrangement. It combines a driving go...

Hi everybody, here are a few updates.

The latest piece I've completed is a Unity Series march for Woodbridge corps band, Anglia Division for the corps' 130th anniversary celebrations in July 2013.

Woodbridge SA

The march is a short, bright, energetic number, about 2:20 mins and around grade 3-4 standard. It features the favourite tunes of two band members, 'Whitechapel' and the chorus 'Joy is the flag flown high'. As yet it is untitled because the band are having some input into that. Once it ha...

New overture - Skydance

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, May 31, 2013, In : new music

I'm pleased to announce that my new project for Birmingham Citadel Band is almost complete. Skydance is the final installment of my Eternity trilogy, so thematically it leads on from the previous two works; Escape Velocity and Fusion.

Where the first two paint in music the picture of our longing for eternity ('and I will run to you 'till I see your face') and the joy of arriving there ('my name is joined with thine'), Skydance will describe the celebration, energy and exuberance that, I believ...

New Trombone Solo

Posted by Martin Cordner on Saturday, December 22, 2012, In : new music

A few months ago I was asked by Brett Baker to write a trombone solo and I'm pleased to report it is now complete.

Brett is an accomplished trombonist with a worldwide reputation - for the past twelve years he has held the prestigious position of principal trombone with the Black Dyke band. It really is an honour to be asked to write something for him.

As part of his master's studies at the University of Salford,
Brett is embarking on a new recording of Salvation...

Two elementary numbers completed

Posted by Martin Cordner on Thursday, March 22, 2012, In : new music

I've recently submitted two new works to UK music ministries for possible inclusion in their forthcoming publication First things First vol. 2 - planned for release late 2012/early 2013.

First Things First was released in 2008 with the aim of providing elementary music for learner bands. There are 16 pieces in volume 1 of the journal and as with the present unity series, optional C, F and Bass Clef parts are available, making it accessible to school and wind bands.

It seems vol. 1 was very we...

New Solo - 'Abide with Me'

Posted by Martin Cordner on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, In : new music

I'm happy to report that my first completed piece of music in a fair while - a Euphonium Solo on the hymn Abide with Me - has been sent to Hythe Salvation Army (pictured above). I'm grateful to Bandmaster Richard Carroll for his patience in waiting quite a few months for it to arrive. It will be played by Wes Carroll, the band's Euphonium soloist.

The piece itself is scored for Unity Series with moderately-easy band parts and a Grade 5-6 soloist part. There are three verses presented; the thi...

'Balham 120' completed

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, September 9, 2011, In : new music
I'm happy to report that Balham 120 made it to the corps (pictured above) in time for band practice on Tuesday. As is so often the case with my writing, the piece took on a life of its own and it actually ended up in the format of a Festival March, complete with changes of tempo and a big finish.

The overriding theme that developed was of God - Father, Son and Spirit reigning eternally, so songs referenced in the music are 'Lord, reign in me', 'I'm a soldier bound for Glory' and 'He is the Lo...

Julian and Val Short especially for the anniversary celebrations at Balham corps, South London later this year. The second is a Euphonium Solo requested by Bandmaster Richard Carroll for his son and my friend Wes Carroll at Hythe corps, Kent. New work - 'Learn, Love and Live'

Whilst on holiday this week I've managed to write Learn, Love and Live - a short three-movement Unity Series suite. I've not written a Unity Series piece since 2008 so it's a welcome return for me (you can read about my interest in writing for smaller ensembles here).

This particular piece has been written for Bandmaster John Moore (Belfast Citadel Salvation Army) and the 2011 Belfast Music School Castle Lake Band which John is leading again this year.  The three choruses have been chosen by J...

New work - Call of the Gospel

Posted by Martin Cordner on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, In : new music
My latest piece Call of the Gospel is now uploaded.  (Count yourself privileged - I finished and sent off this piece at 5.00pm today!)  The ever-expanding SA brass band catalogue means it gets increasingly difficult for writers to come up with original titles, so if you think the title Call of of the Gospel sounds familiar, you're not far wrong.  There's already 'The Call of the Righteous' (Condon) and 'Sound of the Gospel' (Redhead), it was hard to avoid these in coming up with the title.  S...

I'm making good progress on the opener for the London Central Fellowship Band (still untitled) - it's a 3-4 minute arrangement of 'We have a Gospel'.  It will be complete within the next week or so.
