CMI here we come!

Posted by Martin Cordner on Monday, June 18, 2018, In : events & engagements

Leanne and I are pleased to be taking part at the USA's Central Music Institute this August. Part of my responsibilities at Wonderland Camp will be to lead the Faculty Band (with Territorial Music Secretary Dr Harold Burgmayer), and the Wonderland Band (the top student band) with Peggy Thomas. I thought you might be interested to know the music I will be bringing with me.

Star Lake - Here we come!

Posted by Martin Cordner on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, In : events & engagements

Leanne and myself are looking forward to joining the staff team at the USA Eastern Salvation Army's Territorial Music Camp in a couple of week's time. The event is held at Star Lake Camp and Conference Centre in the foothills of the picturesque Ramapo Mountains, New Jersey.

Commonly referred to as simply 'Star Lake', the music camp is one of the USA Eastern Territory's premier training events for young people in music and arts. Rather excitingly, in terms of attendance, this year the camp is...

Lord I Come to You

Posted by Martin Cordner on Thursday, September 12, 2013, In : events & engagements

It was wonderful for Leanne and myself to share with friends at Coventry City Corps this past weekend. Bandmaster Jonathan Fearn invited us to lead the band in a retreat on the Saturday, and the corps in worship on the Sunday and we were very happy to accept.

Our Saturday morning got off to a bright and early start as we headed from Norfolk to the Nettle Hill Conference Centre situated in the countryside to the North East of Coventry. After a quick coffee on arrival we got straight into the fi...

It's been my privilege to be part of EMASS (East Mids & Anglia Division Summer School) this summer. Here are some reflections.

EMASS took place at Uppingham School, Rutland and ran from Sun 28 July - Sat 3 August. 50 students enrolled in two streams of activities which among others included Worship Tech, Worship Band, Sports Ministry, Art, Choral and Brass. The theme for the week was 'Submerged' and we were challenged to go deeper in our faith an...

Netherlands - Day 4 (final)

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, February 1, 2013, In : events & engagements

So we come to Sunday 25th January, our last day at the Brass Weekend. This was the morning where we'd top and tail the four pieces one final time ready to run them in the afternoon. Not in a public concert, but in the intimate setting of the rehearsal room.

After breakfast there was one last opportunity for sectional rehearsals, and this time members of the ASB were on hand to bolster the ranks. This was just what we needed in the cornet sectional. Another couple of hours would have been ide...

Netherlands - Day 3

Posted by Martin Cordner on Thursday, January 31, 2013, In : events & engagements

Saturday 24 January - the busy day!

The day began with breakfast and then we moved into session 1. The ASB took time to rehearse for the forthcoming evening concert and there delegates divided up for sectional rehearsals. I was able to do some work with the cornet players. We looked at Stephen Bulla's Lift up your voice but most of the time was given to Ken Downie's tour de force Music of Thanksgiving.  Originally written for London Citadel Band, Canada, this piece is a fifteen minute workout ...

Netherlands - Day 2

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, January 25, 2013, In : events & engagements

Day 2 started with breakfast at Eric & Femmy's house in Zeist.  We then had some time including lunch with Olaf Ritman and his wife Marleen in Ede.  In case you don't know, Olaf is the bandmaster of the Amsterdam Staff Band of the Salvation Army. Along with Marleen and their two children they worship at the Ede corps. Zeer aardige mensen.

Netherlands - Day 1

Posted by Martin Cordner on Thursday, January 24, 2013, In : events & engagements

Hi everyone,

It's great to be here with Leanne in the Netherlands for the Salvation Army's first annual Brass Weekend.  We understand that at this stage there are around 50 delegates attending plus staff. We're in for a good weekend, I'm sure.

We've had a good flight over...the weather in Belfast was generous and since landing in Amsterdam this afternoon, we've enjoyed being with good friends in the town of Zeist, not far from the city of Utrecht. Tomorrow the serious work begins and I hope to...

Leanne and I are really looking forward to joining colleague Salvationists in the Netherlands next week for the first annual Brass Weekend over 25-27 January.

The weekend is an exciting new event and it's a real honour for us to be part of it. Among our responsibilities will be workshops, sectional rehearsals and opportunity to spend time with the Amsterdam Staff Band.

I'll try and keep you posted on twitter, and in due course will post a short article on this site.

Hanging with the Canadians

North York Temple Corps building

Hey everybody, I'm back from an excellent few days in Canada. The purpose of my trip was to lead a spiritual retreat for the North York Temple Band of The Salvation Army, based in Toronto.

Under the capable leadership of Bandmaster Glenn Barlow, the band is presently riding the crest of a wave; boasting a thriving membership (most of whom are under the age of 25), a catalogue of CD recordings and a forthcoming tour of the UK in May 2013.

Visit to Canada

Posted by Martin Cordner on Sunday, September 23, 2012, In : events & engagements

I'm pleased to tell you that I recently accepted an invitation from North York Temple Band to be the guest at their spiritual retreat over 9-11 November this year.  I'm thrilled to have the invitation and excited at the prospect of a reunion with friends I met at the 2010 Senior Music Camp, Jackson's Point. The formal arrangements are being made but all being well, during our forthcoming holiday time at the end of October/early November, I'll fly to Canada to be part of this event.

The Great Um Bongo Quest

Posted by Martin Cordner on Sunday, August 5, 2012, In : events & engagements

Come on, sing with me:

"Way down deep in the middle of the Congo
A hippo took an apricot, a guava and a mango.
He stuck it with the others, and he danced a dainty tango.
The rhino said, "I know, we'll call it Um Bongo"

The python picked the passion fruit, the marmoset the mandarin.
The parrot painted packets, that the whole caboodle landed in.
So when it comes to sun and fun and goodness in the jungle,
They all prefer the sunny funny one they call Um Bongo!

Um Bongo, Um Bongo, They drink it in t...

10% inspiration, 90% perspiration

Posted by Martin Cordner on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, In : events & engagements

I'm so pleased to have completed the London 10k this past Sunday. As you may know, I took part to raise funds for a missionary project in the DR of Congo which has been sponsored by my church - Sydenham Salvation Army. This project includes myself being part of a children's summer music camp and providing musical instruments and various bits of equipment for the SA in that country. You can get all the details on my justgiving page here.

My brother-in-law David ran with me (really appreciated t...

It's official. On 7 August this year I will join two colleagues in flying out to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo to do three things. First, open a health centre that has been built with the love and support of Sydenham Salvation Army, my church. Second, to help lead a music school for young people. And third, have our lives and worldviews changed beyond belief.

Apart from being impressed by the montage image above (yes - it's my tee shirt and race number su...

Guesting at Camp Ladore

Posted by Martin Cordner on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, In : events & engagements
I'm pleased to announce that I'll be attending The Salvation Army's Pendel (Pennsylvania & Delaware) area music camp as special guest this year.

The week is held at Camp Ladore, a site owned by The SA and it takes place in over nine days in July. Mr Harold Burgmayer is the Divisional Music Director out there and is responsible for the camp.  Harold's a good guy with a brain like a machine - he even knows what 'Tessitura' means - I had never heard of it!  He and I have become acqainted as we'...
