Preview: new ISB CD

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, September 22, 2017, In : cd recordings

Soon to be released at the National Brass Band Finals on Saturday 14 October, 'Endeavour - a weekend with the ISB' is the International Staff Band's latest 'repertoire' album - a selection of music they have featured over the past year or so. As I have some music on the recording I thought I would take opportunity to give you a heads-up on the pieces we know are included. If you want to pre-order your CD you can do so here.

My own work Endeavour is the title track and was written in 2014 for t...

CD Review: Vain Resistance

Posted by Martin Cordner on Monday, November 28, 2016, In : cd recordings

When a piece of mine is recorded I always appreciate receiving a complimentary CD, so I say thank you to the Amsterdam Staff Band for sending me their latest recording. I have listened to it a few times and to help you decide whether or not to spend your hard-earned cash on it, I thought I would share my feelings on the recording.

First up, the CD is in a unique rounded-edged case which is nice to hold in the hand. The sleeve notes are a little hard to read because of the chosen colours, but t...

Preview - new MSB album

Posted by Martin Cordner on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, In : cd recordings

It was good to receive some information on the forthcoming Melbourne Staff Band studio recording 'My God and King' today. Like all good repertoire albums most of this music has been featured by the band in its programmes recently so the CD will be a good representation of where the band is presently. Here's a preview of the track list:

1. Christ the Lord (Marcus Venables)
An energetic Festival Prelude that sets the Welsh tune Llanfair to a contemporary beat. It was recorded by North York Temple...

Five new albums

Posted by Martin Cordner on Thursday, September 5, 2013, In : cd recordings

Here in Britain we have an expression...'You wait a ages a bus, then two come at once.' Amazingly, this seems to have happened with some of my latest music; some of which comes out on five new brass band CDs this Autumn/Fall. Check out these great albums...

1. First in the hands of the paying public will be the International Staff Band's latest repertoire album Quest. This features Call of the Gospel and Fusion

2. Next up will be Brett Baker's album Novus Vox which he recorded with Enfield Ci...

Don't let this Escape you

Posted by Martin Cordner on Sunday, April 7, 2013, In : cd recordings

Since receiving the latest ASB CD Escape Velocity on Friday I've listened to it a few times over the weekend and here are my first impressions. I must acknowledge though that I'm only in possession of the CD because they sent me a free one (though of course I would have bought one!) I'm very grateful - thanks guys.

First off congratulations to the band on what I am sure will be a very popular CD. They have done a great job with all the pieces in the varied and demanding track list. The sleeve...

New ASB recording: Artwork released

Posted by Martin Cordner on Monday, February 18, 2013, In : cd recordings

Today Mon 18 Feb has seen the Amsterdam Staff Band release the artwork for their forthcoming recording Escape Velocity. I hinted at this ingenious work in my blog post here.  Credit goes to Nathan Sudmeier for the crazy design that brings a smile to one's face. I believe the theme is carried through the pages of the accompanying CD insert too. The CD features my piece Escape Velocity and that gives a particularly warm sense of privilege.

Congratulations to the band. I'm sure brass enthusiasts...

New project - ISB recording

Posted by Martin Cordner on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : cd recordings

Hi everybody,

Wow - has it really been THAT long since I last updated the site? Sincere apologies to all those who have become devastated, disillusioned, lost the faith and started reading Andrew Mackereth's website instead...ha!

Most of you will have heard that the latest ISB 'repertoire' recording is now available from World of Brass. It was my great pleasure to write the sleeve notes for this album... my first outing into this kind of thing. I hope you enjoy them as the experience was akin...

CD Review - Eternal Life

Posted by Martin Cordner on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, In : cd recordings

I was thrilled to recently receive a copy of 'Eternal Life' - the new recording by North York Temple Band from Toronto, Canada.

If you've been following my posts you'll know that this album is unique in that it entirely comprises music that is unrecorded and unpublished. It's hard for me to be totally objective when it includes two of my own works (!) but for the benefit of those wondering about whether to splash-out £15 for the CD, here are my thoughts on the end result.

Minor issues
I'd like...

USA Western Territorial Band & Songsters CD

Posted by Martin Cordner on Thursday, February 16, 2012, In : cd recordings

It's always a wonderful surprise to come home a find a parcel waiting for you, and it's especially good if there's a CD inside. It's an even greater - and happier - surprise when the CD contains one of your pieces (and you realise you don't have to pay the bill!) On this occasion I'm expressing thanks to Territorial Music Director Neil Smith for sending me a copy of Day of Rejoicing, the latest recording from the USA Western Territorial Band and Songsters

On this recording the band features ...

New North York Temple Band recording

Posted by Martin Cordner on Friday, February 10, 2012, In : cd recordings

It's been a thrill to learn recently that two of my earlier works, Battle Call and Amazing Grace have been chosen for the new North York Temple Band (Toronto, Canada) CD recording.

Bandmaster Glenn Barlow has chosen a repertoire of not-yet published (and possibly previously unrecorded?) manuscripts. The music has been written entirely by younger composers (yes - I am still fairly young, thank you for asking) and there is a strong British representation, too with five of the seven composers h...

'Chronicles' new MSB CD released

Posted by Martin Cordner on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, In : cd recordings
The new CD from the Melbourne Staff Band is out now!  Looking at the playlist there's good variety of content and the guys are a step ahead with, as far as I can see, at least three pieces being brand new works. Those of you attending the ISB120 weekend or seeing the MSB during it's UK tour beforehand will be able to pick up a copy soon.  Really pleased that Bandmaster Ken Waterworth has selected Synergy for the album - can't wait to hear it. In fact, Sydenham Salvation Army is well represent...
