Fearless (2013)

Duration: approx. 7:00

Fearless is my first attempt at a more substantial work for solo Euphonium. It was requested by B/M Ken Waterworth for the Melbourne Staff Band

With this work I wanted to write something fresh for the Euphonium players of today, and I hope the end product is something that will be of use to soloists.

The piece combines two worship songs - one old and one new - that speak of having no fear because God is in control of the future. If you've been following my blog you'll have seen that I've been on an interesting journey with the music of Phil Laeger recently. In recent years Phil gave new treatment to the chorus of a classic SA song by the late Commissioner Stanley Ditmer - I'm in His handsPhil's setting has been extremely popular around the SA world and I have used this as the central reflective section in the piece.

I’m in his hands, I’m in his hands;
Whatever the future holds
I’m in his hands,
The days I cannot see
Have all been planned for me;
His way is best,
You see - I’m in his hands.

Stanley E. Ditmer (1924-2003) arr. Phil Laeger
SA Songbook 732 (Tune by Phil Laeger)

The older, more traditional song is William Freeman Lloyd's My times are in thy hand and I have chosen to set the song to the majestic English tune of St Ethelwald as the finale to the piece. Verse 3 of this song says:

Fearless (excerpt).mp3

My times are in thy hand,
Why should I doubt or fear?
A Father’s hand will never cause
His child a needless care.

William Freeman Lloyd (1791-1853)
SA Songbook 917 (Tune: St Ethelwald TB 174)

I've learned that fear can be an enslaving sensation; it can pervade and control a person's mind, body and spirit. If you're experiencing fear, perhaps this verse from the Old Testament will encourage you as it has me:

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10 NIV

Notice the verse does not say, "try not to fear...". It says, "do not fear"!  May God bless you as you lead a fearless life for Him.
