Fanfare and Flourishes
(2000, revised 2002)

Festival Series 598 (publ. 2005)
Duration: approx. 6:00 mins

This piece was originally written for Regent Hall band (London, UK) round about 2000 and reworked into its present version in 2002.

It opens with cornets, trombones and percussion in a modernistic fanfare built on the first five notes of the song Power of your love by Geoff Bullock, which is the song featured later in the piece. The five notes say "Lord, I come to you".

Lord, I come to You,
Let my heart be changed, renewed,
Flowing from the grace
That I found in You.

And Lord, I've come to know
The weaknesses I see in me
Will be stripped away
By the power of Your love.

Hold me close,
Let Your love surround me.
Bring me near, draw me to Your side.
And as I wait
I'll rise up like the eagle,
And I will soar with You,
Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love.

Wilfred Heaton connoisseurs will detect harmonies inspired by his great music. He was and continues to be one of my brass band heroes.

For your interest, when the opening cornet/trombone fanfare finishes the rest of the band have a 20-30 second interlude to play. This is there to give cornet and trombone players time to return to their seats if they have been stood antiphonally for the fanfare.

The original version of the piece used Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man at the beginning but when it came to publication, a new fanfare was required so the present version was written in February 2002. The two percussion hits at the beginning are, of course, a nod in the direction of Copland's fine work.

Subsequently I used Fanfare & Flourishes as the basis for a suite of music written for the commissioning (ordination) of the Crossbearers session of cadets in May 2002 - Leanne and myself were part of that session.  That suite is called The Gift and over the years it has been performed at summer music camps in the UK, and more recently in 2011 at Camp Ladore (Pennsylvania USA) as the finale to the closing concert.
