Call of the Gospel (2011)

General Series 2142 (publ. April 2015)
Duration: approx. 3:20

Requested by Bandmaster David Daws for the London Central Fellowship BandCall of the Gospel  is a lively concert overture.

The music is built around the chorus 'We have a Gospel' from the Gowans & Larsson musical 'Take Over Bid, which unbelievably is now 45 years old.

For those of you living outside the SA (in the normal world!), Salvation Army officers John Gowans (1934-2012) and John Larsson each served as General (world leader) of the movement and years ago, wrote a series of musicals - the songs from which have been warmly and widely adopted into the Army's repertoire.  General John Gowans was promoted to Glory in 2012.

If you want to read more about Gowans/Larsson and the phenomenon that is their musicals, a salvationist friend Morvyn Finch has put together an informative website.

Anyhow, We have a Gospel is a catchy chorus and in this arrangement I have sought to give it a fresh, 21st century setting including diversions into Latin and Broadway styles. Here are the words:

We have a gospel that matches the hour,
We have discovered the true source of power,
Man is a weakling, but he can be strong,
Choosing the right and refusing the wrong.
Man has no meaning, no purpose, no soul,
Till he discovers that God is his goal.
This is the gospel that claims all our powers,
This is good news for this age of ours.

John Larsson
SA Songbook Chorus 210

The LCFB have recorded the piece on their album Bandology which was released at the band's annual Gala Concert on 10 Sept 2011. In the meantime look out for the band in concert and you might get to hear it!
