You are always there (2003)
Peter and Hanneke Jacobs

GS 2110 (publ. 2012)
Duration: approx. 4:30

This Cornet and Euphonium Duet was written in 2003 for David Purkiss and Darren Willis, who at that time were principals and soloists with the SA East Midlands Youth Band.

I can't remember too much about the commission other than getting a phone call from one of the guys c. 2002 whilst in our first appointment in Stockport and talking some ideas through, but I'm not sure though whether this particular choice of song was requested or whether I volunteered it for the duet treatment. Either way I understand it was played out a few times, but as far as I know it hasn't being played by any other bands to date. *Update 2012 - the piece is now published, so is (hopefully) played by bands*

The song itself was originally penned for a Christian kid's TV show in the States called Colby's Clubhouse which ran from 1987-2000. The song writers Peter and Hanneke Jacobs wrote and produced the show and apparently wrote the songs, too. If you're interested in hearing the song in the context of an episode click here. The song is featured around 5:30 mins.

You are always there is a special song for me and I have particular memories of a female voices group (conducted by Andrew Blyth) singing the song at the Canterbury Divisional Music school back in the mid 1990s. The song is perhaps a little melancholy in style, but it's a beautifully shaped melody and in my view translates well to brass. Here are the words:

When I talk to you I know you listen,
And when I'm scared I always know that you are there.
In your presence I will feel your comfort,
That's why I know that I can come to you in prayer,
It's in the stillness that you touch me,
And show me just how much you care.
And as my heart fills with your wonder,
I know that you are always there.

You are always there,
You are always there,
And your love will never cease,
You fill me with your peace,
You are always there

You are always there,
You are always there,
When I come to you in prayer,
I know that you are always there.

There are times when I have been too busy,
And there are times when I don't take the time to pray.
But you are always there just waiting for me,
Until I come to you and put my cares away,
It's in the stillness that you touch me,
And show me just how much you care.
And as my heart fills with your wonder,
I know that you are always there.

You are always there,
You are always there,
And your love will never cease,
You fill me with your peace,
You are always there

You are always there,
You are always there,
When I come to you in prayer,
I know that you are always there.

When I come to you in prayer, I know that you are always there.
