Crossbearers (2002)

Festival Series 586 (publ. 2004)
Duration: approx. 3:50

Crossbearers is the march I wrote for the commissioning of the UK's Crossbearers session of cadets in May 2002. Leanne and I were part of that session and are proud to be called Crossbearers and to be associated with our brothers  and sisters of the session. The cadet's band did a very good reading on the sessional CD, indeed it was an immense privilege and pleasure to be part of that recording.

Stylistically the piece is very much in the concert march genre (in the Army this is referred to as a Festival March).  It features two tunes, Stand up, Stand up Jesus (SA songbook 699) and Lord, for the years. The former is a challenge to the cadets and indeed Christians everywhere; the latter a song of thanksgiving to the God who calls all kinds of people into service with Him.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
Ye soldiers of the cross!
Lift high his royal banner,
It must not suffer loss.
From victory unto victory
His army he shall lead,
Till every foe is vanquished,
And Christ is Lord indeed.

George Duffield (1818-88)
SA Songbook 699 (Tune: Stand up for Jesus TB 264)

Lord, for the years Your love has kept and guided,
Urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way,
Sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided:
Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today.
