Citadel Tactics  (2015)

PROGRAMME NOTE
Requested by Bandmaster Mark Ayling for Eastbourne Citadel Corps to mark its 125th anniversary in 2015, this work is a bright and somewhat unusual Triumph-series march.

When searching for the history of the Salvation Army in Eastbourne my attention was drawn to the infamous Eastbourne Riots of the 1890s which saw local Salvationists regularly persecuted by the Skeleton Army, members of the public and even local politicians. To acknowledge this important time in the corps' history I have selected old war songs (Wonder-working power, Are you washed? and From Strength to Strength) that demonstrate faith in God not just for present challenges, but for the future as well; and a section near the end references music hall tunes of the Victorian era as well as that favourite for corps anniversaries - All through the years. All of this gives the march a familiar march a unique structure without - I hope - losing the march feel.

The third tune From Strength to Strength is a reminder of these words from the SA songbook and is a Call to Arms for the salvationists of Eastbourne Citadel corps:

Soldiers of Christ, arise,
And put your armour on,
Strong in the strength which God supplies
Through his eternal Son.
Strong in the Lord of hosts,
And in his mighty power,
Who in the strength of Jesus trusts
Is more than conqueror.

SASB 695
Charles Wesley (1707-88) (verses)

The march is set to be be premiered at a celebration weekend on 9-10 May 2015.

May God bless and continue to use the Eastbourne Citadel corps as a force for good in the community!
